Manage a work

Library editors, library owners, and global administrators can open a title and select Manage this work. Reader progress and personal collections are not changed by these controls.

Use Details to correct the title, author, description, publisher, publication year, ISBN, language, and imported subjects readers see. Fill missing details searches Open Library but fills only blank fields; it does not replace edits you already saved.

Genres can follow the server’s subject-matching rules or use an exact manual selection for this work. See Genres and metadata for the difference.

Open Artwork, then choose what you want to change:

  • Ebook cover is used for the ebook and while browsing books that include an ebook.
  • Audiobook cover is used while listening and for browsing audiobook-only books.

Choose Upload image, select an image from Artwork library, or search for another cover. Uploading or choosing an image saves immediately. Changing the ebook cover also updates its browsing image. Audiobook artwork stays separate. Original files are never changed.

When Audiobook cover is selected, search returns only Open Library audio editions with their own cover image. If no matching artwork is available, try a shorter title or an audiobook ISBN, or upload your own image. Ordinary book covers are not substituted into these search results.

Use automatic artwork returns to artwork from the file. If it has none, Aldus uses another available cover or a generated design. Artwork fills its frame without stretching. Ebook covers use a portrait frame; audiobook covers use a square frame. Edges may be cropped when an image has a different shape. Save fallback design saves changes to the generated cover’s appearance.

Existing images stay in Artwork library. If you previously chose different library and ebook covers, the ebook choice becomes the browsing cover; the previous image remains available to choose again.

The Files tab keeps reading editions and audiobook narrations under the same work. Open a file entry to review its immutable revisions or upload a newer file. Adding a revision never rewrites the original media file.

  1. Add at least one EPUB and one audiobook under Files.
  2. Open Sync and choose the reading edition and narration to pair.
  3. Select Start synchronization. Alignment runs on the server, so you can leave the page.
  4. Return to review the status. Ready means readers can switch formats at the matching sentence. Needs attention includes an error under technical details; Out of date means one of the source files changed and the pair must be synchronized again.

Long audiobooks may take hours on CPU. The rest of Aldus remains usable while a job is queued or processing. See Exact synchronization for how the resulting position behaves for readers.

Deletion is intentionally last in Details. Aldus refuses to delete a work while it still has reading editions or narrations. Remove those file entries first, then confirm Delete work. This is permanent and does not delete files in a read-only external Source.
